Dancing with the Stars Recap: A Fan Favorite Goes Home as 1 Judge Pulls Out the Rulebook in Tense Scolding on Super Bowl Night

It’s week 5 in the ‘DWTS’ ballroom with 11 remaining contestants

It’s five weeks into the competition and the theme on Oct. 13 was all-things Super Bowl.

Each of the 11 remaining contestants danced to a song from an iconic performance from a halftime show.

Last week, Ciara Miller and Brandon Armstrong left the ballroom, and followed Taylor Hanson and Britt Stewart, Giada De Laurentiis and Alan Bersten, Conner Leavitt and Adele Zaikman and Sarah Jane Nader and Hailey Bills, who were all previously went home.

See who put on a stellar performance and scored major touchdowns, and who will be sitting on the sidelines next week.

1 Fan Favorite Goes Home

The judges began the elimination by saying that in no particular order, based on judges scores and viewer votes, the first contestants safe included, Julia and Ezra, Maura and Mark, Jackson and Emma, Harry and Jenna and Amber and Pasha.

The next four included, Ezra and Daniella, Jenna and Val, Tatyana and Jan and Connor and Rylee.

Between Guillermo and Witney and Tyler and Sharna, the couple voted home was Guillermo and Witney.

“I want to say thank you to all the audience, thank you to everyone and Dancing with the Stars, said Guillermo. “I had a lot of fun, it was great. Witney, I love you for teaching me how to dance, thank you so much.”

“Thank you so much for making the season just so fun, so enjoyable,” said Witney. “He has taken care of me so much throughout this entire season, it’s felt like an empowering season.”

Ezra Topped the Leaderboard with His Fiery Salsa

Daniella warned Ezra she needed their salsa, to “Hot in Herre” by Nelly, to feel like the “biggest party,” then asked if he even ever goes to parties. “Not that often,” he admitted, explaining that he spent every moment training in track and field.

But Ezra figured out how to bring the party by starting with full-floor body rolls in front of a wall of flames, before tearing up the dance floor with Daniella. He ended the dance by ripping off his shirt as the ballroom got to their feet.

“That was like a mastercall at interpreting the movement,” said Carrie Ann, who told Ezra he makes the choreography something completely his own.

“I get lost in your performance,” said Derek adding that Ezra’s in command the whole time. The judge also called out that his face is coming alive too.

Joe said there’s a “bright light” that comes out of Ezra.

“That wasn’t hot, that was smoldering,” Bruno said. He praised their partnership and said he doesn’t know how Daniella does it.

Harry’s Samba Made Carrie Ann Pull Out the Rule Book

Harry said he looked up to Usher since he was a teenager, so they’re dancing to his song “Yeah!” featuring Lil Jon and Ludacris.

Jenna said during practice for their samba, she wants to push him to his limit.

Harry pulled out some of Usher’s iconic leg kicks to kick off the dance, before they were joined by a drumline and backup dancers.

Bruno said it felt like “an event” but said the samba has no heel leads, which Harry kept going back to.

“I agree 100% with Bruno,” said Carrie Ann, pointing out that she wants Harry to challenge himself a little more. She said there also was a lift, to which Jenna replied, “A lift?” Carrie Ann then read the definition of a lift (when one of the dancers has both feet off of the floor at the same time with the assistance of support of their partner).

“I feel like I got told off,” Derek said, before giving his assessment. Derek said it was a “fantastic performance and I hope everyone at home loves it.” He pointed out Harry’s heel leads but said he hopes to see him next week.

Joe told Harry, “awesome work.”

Jenna told Julianne in the skybox she thought the lift meant if she lifted her partner, but “totally hear Carrie Ann. I will take it, sure.”

During Carrie Ann’s 8 score, Jenna rolled her eyes, before she and Harry hugged and screamed getting their first 9 from Joe.

Jenna Left the Judges Speechless

Jenna called last week their “breakthrough,” but said this week, they need to show “passion” with their paso doble.

As they practiced on the set of her ABC show The Rookie, Jenna said she needs to bring her character’s energy — “Bailey energy” — to the floor.

She started her dramatic routine to “Bad Romance” by Lady Gaga on the floor before bringing fierce moves throughout.

Joe said he didn’t know what a paso doble is, but thought she “crushed it” because he forgets who the pro is.

Bruno called it “thrilling from start to finish.” He said it was exactly what he wanted and that Jenna gave him the best moves, lines and feeling of Spain, “100%.”

“For me, that was the first touchdown that we had tonight,” Carrie Ann said, adding that she “loved” everything.

Derek threw out a plethora of football puns before concluding that it was a “Super Bowl performance.”

Guillermo Improved His Score and Sent the Crowd Wild

“Carrie Ann was not too nice,” Guillermo said at practice recalling the time last week when the judge said he lost “all his joy.” He said Alfonso wouldn’t give him the mic in the moment but he was going to tell Carrie Ann that “samba is hard, but maybe she had a bad day.”

Witney said they’re channeling Bad Bunny and Rihanna’s pregnant Super Bowl appearance for their take on Bad Bunny’s “Tití Me Preguntó.”

At the end of their package Guillermo joked, “I don’t want to go home, so Carrie Ann, you better give me a 6.”

Their dance kicked off with Guillermo sitting on a couch being fanned by troupe members before lip-syncing to the song and making a grand entrance under Witney—who was doing a split while being held in the air by back-up dancers. He pulled out a knee slide (without the help of anyone!) as they ignited the crowd in the room.

“That was so entertaining,” said Derek, who praised Witney for her “clever” routine.

Joe joked them “all three” are getting week after week, then he got into Bruno-mode to say, “Andy Richter walked, so Guillermo could run!”

Bruno said they gave them “plenty to think about.”

Carrie Ann called Witney “the woman who can do it all.” Then, she asked Guillermo if he was calling her out because if so, “You better bring the goods.” Lucky for him, she was being playful and said she thought he “brought the joy back.”

Tatyana’s Salsa Made 1 Judge Growl

Tatyana told Jan getting a 6 last week from the judges “hurt her feelings.” This week, she’s ready to show her best moves with a salsa to Kendrick Lamar’s “Squabble Up.”

She told Jan her mother’s side is from Panama and they love dancing salsa “all the time.” “I suspect it’s in my body,” she added.

Their salsa was sultry, spicy and had plenty of attitude.

“Thank you, I saw that, I saw the improvement,” Carrie Ann said before letting out a growl. She said Tatyana is still internalizing some things, but sees improvement.

Derek said he “really loves watching” her, but the routine was too “laid back” for a salsa. He wants to see her “close those feet” to finish the steps better.

Joe said it was his “favorite of the night.”

“You are a sexy mama aren’t you,” said Bruno, adding that he wants to see her channel Angela Bassett and Tina Turner next time. “I want that from you because you can do it.”

Julia Performed the Do-Over of Her Dreams

“I feel good, I’m finally enjoying it,” Julia told Ezra as they practiced in New York City this week. “I just want to keep going up.”

Ezra told Julia they’re dancing a jazz to “Jenny From the Block” [Track Masters Remix] by Jennifer Lopez featuring Jadakiss and Styles P. and brought out chairs as their props. “Sorry judges, but this is for the millenials,” Ezra said, indicating that they’ll include moves from Save the Last Dance.

“This is my chance for the do-over that I’ve always wanted, so I just have to go out there and own it, I have no other choice,” she said.

Julia pulled out similar dance moves fans know from her hit movie by starting her routine in a chair, then mixed in hip hop with ballet moves, just like her iconic character. This time though, the attitude was all Julia’s.

Bruno told her she got into the groove “brilliantly” and said he had no idea that she had a “hidden” hip hop talent. He told her the way she played the character, was her best so far.

Carrie Ann said, “I know this is the wrong movie, but I think we just got served!” She said it was “so wonderful” seeing Julia dance with that confidence.

Derek called her over for a hug and said “she did not disappoint.”

Joe said he saw Lopez dance at the Super Bowl and said Julia could have been up there with her.

Blast from the Past

DWTS alumni and Super Bowl champions DeMarcus Ware, Danny Amendola, Emmitt Smith and Donald Driver all performed a quick dance with the troupe members to “In the Air Tonight” by Phil Collins.

Connor Ripped Off His Pants During the Samba

Rylee warned Connor they have to “really show up” this week after being at the bottom of the leaderboard. “I want people to leave wanting more,” Connor told her, but admitted he’s worried about doing a samba. “I’m stressed,” he said. “I want it to be great cause I want to stay on this show.”

He started their dance to “Hips Don’t Lie” by Shakira, featuring Wyclef Jean with two troupe members ripping off his black pants to reveal a bright orange fringe-frilled pair.

Joe told Connor that America loves him because he’s “relatable.”

“I can’t get over those pants,” said Bruno. “Whatever happens you’ll get a job at the car wash with that.” He pointed out that the pants couldn’t hide that Connor’s hip movement and footwork needed improvement.

Carrie Ann said it was too much content that wasn’t “correct,” to which the crowd booed. “It’s OK, we have good days and we have bad days. This wasn’t your best,” she said.

Derek said the energy was a 10, but the technique, weight transfers and timing needed work.

Tyler Got His First 8’s of the Season

Tyler said if he wasn’t “such an idiot” in college, he thinks he may have been able to make it to the Super Bowl one day. But Sharna told him she’s going to get him to the DWTS finale with their jazz routine this week.

Their dance to “The Time (Dirty Bit)” by Black Eyed Peas featured many lifts, including a full Dirty Dancing overhead lift.

“OK Swayze, I see you,” Derek told Tyler, and said his jazz moves were “A+.”

Joe said he’s “so proud” of Tyler and knows the effort he puts into his dancing as a tall man with a football player build.

“I love when you go Dirty Dancing, it always works,” said Bruno. He noticed that Tyler paid attention to what they said and his timing and lines were better.

“That was so exciting,” said Carrie Ann, who said her favorite part was all the lifts. “You’re actually becoming a dancer,” she said.

Amber Gave Her Spiciest Performance Yet

Pasha told Amber he was “so proud” of her dance last week, even if they went down on the leaderboard. One win though was their upside-down split that went viral. “Please be careful!” Pasha told fans.

During practice, Amber hoped the fun of the samba will help get her scores up this time.

She started their dance to “Mi Gente” by J Balvin and Willy William with a series of solo body rolls before they ignited the floor together with fun scarf props, splits and super spicy moves.

“What is it that the kids say? You ate that song!” said Carrie Ann.

Derek told Amber she was “so fierce” right away and praised her splits in the middle of the routine.

“Am I allowed to say this? That was hot,” said Joe.

Bruno said instead of “going like a hammer” on everything, Amber was “playing with it” and told her to do that moving forward in “every dance.”

Score: 34/40

Jackson’s Salsa Made Carrie Ann Swear on TV

Jackson started his package by saying how nervous he was being in the bottom three last week. This week wasn’t getting any easier — he had to play in the Banana Bowl in between practicing with Emma. They traveled to D.C. for the game — and to get in the work.

“I’ve never had a week like this in my entire life,” he said. Unfortunately, his team lost so he said he needed to “switch gears and crush this salsa.”

They danced a high-energy salsa routine to “Uptown Funk” by Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars complete with band and back-up dancers on the stage. At the end of their dance, Jackson nailed a series of spins, twirling Emma across the ballroom.

Bruno told him his performance has improved but said that he needs to focus on the lifts and passes “because you’re still a big jagged.”

“The confidence has kicked in,” said Carrie Ann. “That is what we have been waiting for. Savannah Banana, you’re kicking ass. I’m not supposed to say that — can I say that? That’s how excited I am!” She said he still needs to fine-tune a few things but called it “amazing.”

For Derek, he said it was Jackson’s “best dance.” “It felt like you really committed,” he added.

Joe complemented what Jackson is “doing for baseball.”

Maura Powered Through the Pain

Picture background

When Mark told Maura they’re dancing to “Only Girl (In the World)” by Rihanna, Maura said she “froze” the one time she met the superstar. “There were tears and snots and everything,” she said and after Rihanna hugged her, Maura said she swiped the snot on Rihanna’s jacket. “I did,” she said.

During practice to their tango, Maura broke down in pain and crumbled to the floor. “I’ve been having this like twinge in the left side of my neck,” she said, adding that it’s getting worse.

Despite the setback, she glided across the floor in her signature elegant way.

Joe complemented her posture and said she makes him proud of be Irish.

Bruno told Maura she makes it look easy “and it isn’t.”

Carrie Ann told her her movements could be “more punctuated” in Latin dances, but said, “still, a great dance.”

Derek complemented her top line but said her neck and head went too far back to break the line of the spine. He wants to see more attack and energy but ended with a “well done.”

Joe Buck Joined the Judges Table

Monday Night Football sportscaster Joe Buck stepped in as a guest judge alongside Derek Hough, Bruno Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba. “I know absolutely nothing about dancing,” he said in his intro.
